Senior Research Scientist (PHRI)

Dr K B Leena has a doctoral Degree in Biochemistry from University of Kerala in 1997 and is an integral part of the Population health and Research Institute, Trivandrum. She is a co-investigator in many population based research initiatives such as a large cohort study involving 400,000 subjects under the Urban and Rural Trivandrum Tobacco Study. (supported by CTSU, University of Oxford) (Sample size: 400, 000 males) initiated in 2000 and this study has been progressing well and repeat surveys are being conducted once in three years. She has completed as a CoPI in many projects namely, Functional Gastrointestinal disorders and gastroesophageal Reflux Disease in the Population in collaboration with the Mayo Clinic, and Kansas University, USA (Sample size: 40,000), gastroesophageal reflux disease and gut microbiota funded by Karolinska Institute, Sweden (Sample size: 1200), Intestinal tuberculosis diagnostics and the differentiation from Crohn’s disease in populations of high vs. low tuberculosis endemicity (Multi-site Collaborative Project: Lovisenbergn Diakonal Hospital, Oslo, Norway and 4 sites in India ). (Sample size: 500), population based study of sero-prevalence of hepatitis B markers, occult HBV and genotype and progression to hepatocellular carcinoma in Kerala (Supported by many agencies / University of PISA) (Sample Size: 40,000) and Dietary, life style and genetic factors associated with dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and it’s severity in a population based cohort in South India (Sample size 2200) supported by: National Institute for Health Research Nottingham Digestive diseases Biomedical Research Unit (NIHR NDDBRU), Nottingham University Hospitals and University of Nottingham, UK.

Governance

PHRI is a non-profit, non-governmental research institute associated with a higher education organisation. PHRI is part of the Research Foundation of Sree Gokulam Medical College and Research Foundation (www.sgmc.in). This institute has a Governing Council, a Research Cell and an Independent Ethics Committee (which regulate research activities). Sree Gokulam Medical College and Research Foundation is affiliated with Kerala University.

Population Health and Research Institute (PHRI) Research Team:

Population Health and Research Institute, established in 2006 with dedicated space of 6000 sq feet, has a core staff of a Senior Research Scientist (DR K B Leena) with 30 Years of Research Experience and intense training in Epidemiology, nutrition and Molecular Medicine from Karolinska Institute, Sweden and IARC, Lyon, France (WHO). In addition, we have a bio-statistician, program supervisor, 2 community project supervisors and a work force of 26 social scientists and social workers. There are 4 data entry operators on a contract basis for web based data entry.
